Are you a teeth grinder?

December 3rd, 2009

Bruxism

What is bruxism? Bruxism is the clenching or grinding of your teeth while you are asleep. It is not just an annoyance; it exerts thousands of pounds of pressure on the biting surfaces of the teeth, which can lead to jaw pain and damage to your teeth, as well as to the surrounding bone, gums, and jaw joint. Left untreated, bruxism can cause:

* Tooth sensitivity as the enamel layer is worn down, exposing the more sensitive dentin layer.

* Cracked, broken, or chipped teeth

*Fracturing of porcelain crowns

*Erosion at the neck of the tooth

*Problems associated with how the teeth fit together

*Sore muscles and sore jaw

*Popping and clicking in the joint

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or think you might be grinding your teeth at night, please give us a call.  (480) 820-6080

What to look for when getting dental insurance

Make Sure Your Dental Insurance Covers These Services

Most dental benefit plans allow you to receive a specified amount of oral health care each year. Before you decide on one plan over another, be sure you know how much your plan will cover for each year (your maximum), your deductible, and when your benefits roll over (if you are on a contract year or a calendar year plan).

At minimum, most plans allow the following:

  • initial oral exam (when you are seeing a new dentist)—once per dentist
  • regular (recall) examinations—every six months
  • complete x-rays—once every three years
  • bitewing x-rays—once each year
  • tooth cleaning (also called prophylaxis or hygiene appointment)—every six months
  • topical fluoride treatment—twice each year
  • sealant application—as needed for children under 18 years of age. These services are all either diagnostic or preventive, in that they are designed to evaluate your oral health, detect problems and prevent decay and gum disease. It’s important that you understand that dental care in itself is not expensive; it’s dental neglect that winds up hitting you hard in your wallet.Widespread diagnostic and preventive care has greatly reduced the incidence of dental decay. Today, more than half of the nation’s school children have never had a cavity. Dental insurance, despite its flaws, complexities and exclusions, has played a big role in improving our oral health. It’s up to you to use that insurance effectively.Source - The California Dental Association

    Holiday Gifts!

    October 5th, 2009

Are you wondering what to get your family member or loved one for Christmas this year? How about a set of beautifully white teeth!  Right now we are having a 10% off special on chair-side bleaching.  Chair-side bleaching is when the patient comes in and gets their teeth whitened up to 10 shades all in a couple of hours!  We also have an at home kit that you can buy a certificate for.  The take home kit is basically a set of trays that are made specifically for the patient and 4 syringes of bleach.  This is about a two week process but the patient is able to do it at home.  So give the gift of a beautiful smile this Christmas and we promise it will be the gift that keeps on giving.

    Brushing Your Teeth

    August 31st, 2009
Proper tooth brushing involves four things:
  • a soft toothbrush
  • toothpaste with fluoride
  • the correct brushing angle
  • brushing in a pattern
  • It’s important to brush at least twice a day using a soft toothbrush. The flexible bristles of a soft toothbrush are gentler on the gums and make it much easier to remove the plaque below the gum line, where periodontal disease starts.Use a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride hardens the outer enamel layer of the teeth. It might stop a cavity in its tracks and give you more resistance to future cavities.

Angle the bristles of the brush along the gum line at a 45-degree angle. Apply firm but gentle pressure so the bristles slide under the gum line.

Move the brush over the entire surface of two or three teeth at a time in small, circular motions. Allow some overlap as you move to the next teeth. Tilt the brush and use the tip to brush the backs of the front teeth.

It’s fine to brush in any regular pattern you choose, but since the insides of the teeth tend to get less attention, you might start with the insides of the upper teeth, then go to the insides of the lower teeth. Switch to the outsides of the upper teeth, and then the outsides of the lower teeth. Brush the chewing surfaces of the upper teeth, then the lower teeth. End by gently brushing your tongue and the roof of your mouth. This removes germs to help keep your breath fresh.

Drink lots of soda? Your teeth may age before their time

    August 31st, 2009

Drinking canned soda—even the diet variety—can cause your teeth to look older than they are by eroding the hard enamel layer with phosphoric acid and staining them with the artificial colorings.

But worse yet, some scientists think too much soda can potentially play a role in tooth loss by weakening your jawbone.

Canned soft drinks contain high amounts of phosphorus, a mineral that can leach calcium from your bones. This can lead to osteoporosis, a condition that makes bones brittle, frail, and susceptible to fracture.

How does this affect your teeth? Your jaws are made of bone, and as your bones weaken from insufficient calcium, their grasp on your teeth becomes weak. Eventually your teeth loosen and fall out.

“We see a number of young women in their teens who, I believe because of poor dietary habits such as drinking diet soda and not getting enough calcium, have the jaws of much older women,” said Ken Wical, D.D.S., professor of restorative dentistry at Loma Linda University. Dr. Wical added that, by the time they are in their thirties, these women frequently lose their natural teeth and are wearing dentures.

Other researchers disagree. Robert Heaney, M.D., calcium researcher at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, points out that an 8-ounce glass of milk can have as much phosphorus as 8 ounces of soda.

Dr. Heaney agrees, however, that drinking soda in place of milk can have serious consequences for your bones. Americans today drink 70 percent more soda than they did in the early 1980s, often at the expense of other, more healthful beverage choices. Without drinking milk, it can be difficult to get the 1000-plus milligrams of calcium you need each day.

So next time you’re thirsty, reach for a glass of low fat milk instead of a soda. You’ll be strengthening your bones and teeth, as well as going a long way to insuring that your natural smile lasts a lifetime.

    Preventative care for your child

    August 13th, 2009

Why is it important for my children to be seen by a dentist every six months?
Children are growing and changing so fast that each of their six-month checkups is essentially a new-patient examination. Teeth are being lost, new ones are growing in, bones are lengthening and elongating, and the bite is being established. Seeing your child every six months lets your dentist track the progress of these events and catch any problems early, when they are easier to correct.
